By 1971 when Marvin Gaye recorded his masterpiece “What’s Going On?” he had long since moved to Detroit and Los Angeles with his Motown family. But to get an idea of what the human experience was like in his and their own hometown, the Soul of the City workers designed a questionnaire that they administered to elders. They wanted to know about drug use, fashion, relationships and what the latest technology was. To take the survey, click HERE.
And here, are a few of the responses the SOTC workers found. There were some interesting responses, especially to the technology question. It turns out that four decades does interesting things to our memories.
